Embracing the New Identity
Once upon a time, there was a product known as Azure AD. It gained popularity over a period of time for its exceptional features and reliability. However, as time went on, the company realized to unify its IAM security portfolio.
Microsoft reveals a major announcement that Microsoft Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) is becoming Microsoft Entra ID.
Microsoft made a landmark launch in May 2022 with the introduction of Microsoft Entra, a comprehensive product family that includes key services as: Microsoft Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), Microsoft Entra Permissions Management basically to manage your identity permissions across multi-cloud infrastructure, and Microsoft Entra Verified ID for Issuing and verifying identity credentials.
Reinventing the Brand
Azure AD has been renamed to Microsoft Entra ID as part of Microsoft’s continuous efforts to streamline its security product line. The Microsoft Entra ID will aid in organizing Microsoft’s IAM portfolio and simplify identity management for customers across many Microsoft product family.
What is changing
A change is being made to the standalone license and service plan display names from October 1, 2023.
- Azure AD Free will be renamed to Microsoft Entra ID Free
- Azure AD Premium P1 will be renamed to Microsoft Entra ID P1
- Azure AD Premium P2 will be renamed to Microsoft Entra ID P2,
- Azure AD External Identities will be renamed to Microsoft Entra External ID
The functionality of Azure AD plans will remain the same, but some feature names will change. For example, Azure AD Conditional Access will become Microsoft Entra Conditional Access.. There have also been some updates and additions to the Entra product family, for example:
- Microsoft Entra Internet Access – Secure access to internet, software as a service, and Microsoft 365 apps
- Microsoft Entra Private Access – Help users to securely connect to private apps from anywhere
In an announcement, the Microsoft spokesperson said :-
‘Capabilities, licensing plans, sign-in URLs, and functionality remain unchanged.‘
